Lipedema is a fat accumulation. It is usually symmetrically formed in the hips, buttocks, legs and thighs, then in the arms and torso and is known for surrounding the areas where it is located. Lipedema fat is edematous and hard in the initial stages. However, in advanced stages, the periphery of the fat lobules is covered with a gelatinous tissue and the inside softens. At this stage, it appears as deformity in the body. In the initial stage of lipoedema, the lower side of the body is usually slightly thicker than the upper side. Therefore, there is a size difference between top and bottom in dress sizes. In lipoedema patients, fats are more concentrated in the waist and ankle areas. As people gain weight, there is swelling in the upper parts of the hips, thighs and legs. However, when weight is lost, fat accumulation in the lower back does not decrease, on the contrary, thinning occurs in the upper parts of the body. In the legs, swelling increases especially in the evening hours and this situation decreases during sleep. Accumulated fat tissues can be seen in the lower parts of the legs above the knees and in the calf with ring-shaped swellings hanging down from the ankle. These patients complain of severe pain. Therefore, the disease is also called painful lipoedema syndrome. Before the decision of lipoedema surgery to be performed in lipoedema disorders, the stage of the patient examined by the specialist doctor is determined. Lipedema has many stages. In the early stages, the patient may encounter small nodules according to the increase in fat accumulation. In the advanced stages, these fat deposits expand and grow larger and form sagging and protrusion towards the sides. Fats accumulated in lipedema slow down blood flow. Therefore, it causes more fat accumulation. In lipedema patients, leg skin is thinned. These legs have excessive bruising even in the slightest bumps. Lipedema is a progressive disease with stages. Stage 1: the skin surface is flat, pearl-like fat lobules are seen and there is an increase in subcutaneous fat tissue. Stage 2: there is an irregular rough skin surface in the form of nodules or masses. Stage 3: the legs and knees are now deformed. Large nodules and fat deposits are seen.
